bette: Milan, Italy - 2004-02-24

porn for breakfast

With only pennies to our names Milan hardly seemed like the obvious place for two students to explore but there’s so much more to Milan than the expensive designer living its famous for.
We did all our travelling round the city on foot which was an amazing way to see the cafes, mopeds, letchy men who were obsessed with our weird hair and style and to get a general feel of the city. We found a real bargain hotel, which was very swanky and had free 24-hour explicit television. I must say, I’ve never watched porn along with my breakfast before and probably never will again. It was the only thing that didn’t have any dialogue so we could understand it. Grunts and moans are universal. Anyway enough of the filth!
The central shopping streets are beautiful, lined with elegantly displayed boutiques and amazing architecture and they lead to the shopping mall Galleria Vittorio Emannuelle II. It is absolutely amazing with its mosaic flooring, arches and cafes. The cappuccino in there is the best I have ever had! And on Italian MTV in the Hotel I got really into Cappa Rezza a cool rapper guy so I bought his single in the music store as a memento.
Milan was beautiful but I had to laugh at my disappointment when we emerged from Galleria v e, to see the Duomo Cathedral all covered in scaffolding. Typical. We still got to see the gargoyles and steeples round the sides but it was one thing I was looking forward to. Oh well.
To make up for that we made our way to Castello Sforzesco the castle grounds with the big fountain that soaks you. It was fantastic and had free museums inside and a sort of Roman Bath style part that was cool to play in.
Everyone in Milan was really friendly and we obviously stood out a mile with our pale skin and bright clothes because everyone just blatantly stared. They were all in Furr coats and expensive leather because it must have been cold in January for the Italians but us Scots are used to the cold so we just had on our normal tops and jeans.
Our Hotel was just infront of Central station and we nearly got pick pocketed by two little scruffy boys while we were strolling along next to it. They came right up between us and tried to nick our stuff but I was quick enough to spot the little tyke! Why I oughtta…
Because we were using all the low cost travelling we had to get a bus from the airport to the outskirts of the city, which was a really good way to see the country side. We saw lots of rustic, shack type houses, farms, towns and loads of beautiful churches.
I loved Milan but I need to explore way more of Italy because I feel I only scratched the surface. I think I’ll take a man next time though to fend off the extremely confident men!
