why torreon?!
while in the washroom at the disco in the slightly wealthier city of torreon in central mexico...a guy says something in spanish and i try to reply in my awkward spanish speaking ways...then he talks down to me in english and says its okay to speak english so we talk and the first thing he says is "why are you here?". i believe i was the only "tourist" in torreon. Although arriving in mazatlan and experiencing the beautiful golden beaches and tasting saltwater for the first time and getting attention as the only person in the city to not have a tan was something exciting,i was still alone in an all-spanish speaking city. Infact, i did not speak a word of english for about 36 hours and so i had a friend, daniela, who lived in torreon and invited me to visit her. So i took the twelve hour bus ride to torreon through the winding hills, past the miltary checkstops with guns and bonfires and withstanding watching men in black 2 in dubbed spanish; something even native spanish speakers dont enjoy. I met many people and am still making friends but most important is jorge. I was allowed to stay at his house. The hospitality from him and his family was and still is incredible. Even on the first night we didnt go to bed until six am and we were both exhasuted. He insisted that i take his bed. He took the couch. I could not believe he offered a perfect stranger his bed---but i accepted of course! In torreon they speak english and i am with my friends. I went shopping and to the club only to meet beautiful exotic mexican girls one after the other. One in particular; a girl named laurena -- naturally i cannot get attached as meeting people and becoming close very quickly only to leave is the nature of a traveller howvever i look forward to keeping in touch with her. Here you pay 70 us dollars for a bottle of tequila and sparkling water, coke, and fresca. You drink to your hearts content at a special reserved table while bouncers in suits walk around to ensure safety, and then you dance until four am to songs you dont know. Now it is time for me to have "comer" one of the five meals eaten here in a day. Yesterday comer was with a girl named roberta's family who again i just met that morning. However i proceeded to spend hours with her and her sisters and cousins and all of their boyfriends and her parents who were all the friendliest people who would not even let me help to clean up. I dont know where i will go for comer today but i can only imagine it will be as exciting as yesterday. Today i go to see xmen 2 with many friends and tomorrow i go back to mazatlan alone with only my spanish to speak -- a trip to the original senior frogs and one last swim at the beach -- and a flight back to l.a. and samoa....not to rush of course because i am having the time of my lfie aqui and i would not trade a second of it for anything else.
