Walking in the White Nights in Russia's Northern City
My friend Katya (whom I first meet online and made friends with), invited me to visit her home city - St.Petersburg - this summer. I arrived there on June 23, 2002. It was very early in the morning, and the sky was cloudy, but very soon everything's changed, which is so typical for the cities situated near the sea. In 15 minutes you could not believe that there were grey and rainy sky above you just a quarter hour ago!
St.Petersburg is great. Walking along the channels reminded me of Amsterdam, and the boat trip was fantastic. Then I went to Tsarskoe Selo (the small town near St.Petersburg, former residence of Russian tsars) where I had a room booked for me. The hotel is cheap (6 euros a night!!!) and the stuff is very friendly. There is a kitchen there in the house, so you can cook there if you want. I didn't 'cos there are many cafees in Tsarkoye and St.Petersburg.
St.Petersburg is crowdy, especially during White Nights Season - June - when they even do not light up the street lights in the evening, because it's not dark in the midnight! Tsarskoye Selo is quiet but, in my opinion, it's worth spending some days there, because walking the tsar's parks and alleys is healing, and the tsars' palace is very beautiful. (Maybe I will post some pictures on my homepage.)
