Lake titicaca

Hi again,

It has been 2 weeks since leaving Cusco. We headed upwards to Lake Titicaca and rounded it via Puno, then to Copacabana. We experienced a windstorm in the very scary looking town of Juliaca and we frightened of what the following landscape would be like, but the lake was quite nice. Copacabana had the lovely tropical beach setting, except that at 3800 m it wasn´t so warm. We camped at the islands Isla del Sol and Isla de la Luna, near Copacabana, and finally discovered the deserted white-sand beach, lapping blue water and a gorgeous sunset that we had been dreaming of when we set off for South America! (We were probably confused about what travelling through "antiplano" would be like.)

Before heading to La Paz, we thought we would hang out and do some trekking in Sorata (Bolivia), set in a deep valley in gorgeous green mountains (at the foot of the second and third highest peaks in Bolivia). Since we both were sick, and the reason for the green vegetation being the vast amounts of rain which are beginning to fall, we ended up doing much more hanging out than trekking. The most we can say is that our hostal had an impressive selection of videos. Still, Sorata was so nice... like home.

Arriving in La Paz today, we grabbed that first taxi, which subsequently picked up another passenger, and our crammed taxi was almost immediately flagged down by a plain-clothed man flashing a tiny credit-card sized piece of laminated plastic with something "policia". He rather haphazardly checked out one of our bags, our money, our wrists (?), and fingernails (??!), then hopped in the passenger seat, dumped our backpacks and us hastily off on the side of the road, and took off with the taxi driver and other unfortunate passenger (who was as it turns out a foreign Peruvian). This was our introduction to La Paz.

The rainy season seems to be setting in with a vengence now. We may get some snow for Christmas though, it only snows in the summer here!

Will be in touch,
C&O
